It actually thickens the mucus on the cervix thereby blocking the sperms. The hormones in the IUD’s stop the eggs to leave ovaries. Hence, there will be no egg to fertilize with the sperms. This can help in preventing the pregnancy. The doctor uses a speculum in vagina and then inserts IUD through the cervix opening into the uterus. The process duration is of less than 5 minutes
